Challenge in intentional observation

This evening I came across a fascinating surface. I’m sharing it with readers here and challenging you to identify it in the comments.

The first person to identify the surface or object the surface is a part of will receive this platter.

Hopefully the platter is appealing to the winner. It’s about nine inches across, a low-fire clay with a commercial celadon glaze. The plate is one of a few like it that I finished this month.

As needed, I may give some hints along the way. I’ll start off by saying that I came across the surface in question in my studio.

He owns a piece of paper, located somewhere in his house (not on the wall) stating that he earned a B.F.A. in studio art from the University of Nebraska around about 2001. While there, he studied studied architecture, graphic design and ceramics, graduating with a degree in studio art. Paul presently serves as communications manager for a small non-profit doing their print design and marketing. He spends time in his studio as much as possible — which is not nearly enough. It’s either the surface of mars or beeswax and since you said it was in your studio I’ll go with beeswax.

  2. chris says:

    Hm..I’ll bite.

At first glance it looked like wood, but looking at it more I’m thinking it might be a food item? I’m going to go with bread.

Can’t wait to read about what it actually is.

  3. pNielsen says:

Well I was hoping for a few more guesses by this point. I’ll lead you and any future acceptors of the challenge on by saying that one of the first two comments was pretty hot, but not necessarily in their final answer.

  4. Jim Janknegt says:

Can I have a second guess?? Sap leaking out of a board?? If a second guess isn’t fair you can delete my post.

  5. pNielsen says:

There were no rules so a second guess is fair in my book!

And you are correct, kudos! Isn’t it an incredible surface? It’s actually a 2×4. I cut off the ends and the middle section of the board ended up being split into two pieces, with this dry sappy surface on both inside faces.

Since Chris guessed board before supplying a final answer, I’ll send both of you a platter (I have two that are pretty much identical) if you email me your addresses to TheAestheticElevator(at)Gmail(dot)com.

  6. gcijelly says:

Wow, thanks! I’ll send my address along.

But in the meantime, can you post another picture of that board? I love the surface on it. Any plans for it’s use?

  7. chris says:

sorry, forgot to sign out of my other account…that last post was by me.

  8. pNielsen says:

I’ll try and get a photo up in the next week or so.

  9. Tim J. says:

You know, I looked at it the other night and thought it might be a wood surface, but then I also thought it might be some sort of sugary baked thing.
