Upcoming MOBIA events

Just passing this along from the Museum of Biblical Art in New York City— an institution I support, yet have sadly never seen. I hear it’s more of a “gallery” than a “museum.” Worthy effort nonetheless.

    UPCOMING EXHIBITION
Angels of Light: Ethiopian Art from the Walters Art Museum
    March 23-May 20

Acquired largely since 1993, the collection of Ethiopian icons, manuscripts, and bronze processional crosses of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore is today one of the largest and finest collections outside of Ethiopia itself. Historically, Ethiopia was a Christian kingdom with strong ties in both trade and religion to the cultures located around the Mediterranean.

A survey of Ethiopian art—from crosses to icons to manuscripts—makes it clear that, over time, Ethiopian artists transformed their European and Byzantine models and infused their works with a unique sense of form and color. Angels of Light: Ethiopian Art from the Walters Art Museum features approximately 40 highlights (icons, manuscripts, bronze processional crosses, etc.) from the Walters’ permanent collection.

    CONCERT SERIES
Hearing the Sacred: From the Middle Ages to the 21st Century

    Saturday, March 31, 3:00 pm
The Allsar Quartet performs a concert of string quartets based on American spirituals, featuring two works, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s String Quartet No. 1, “Calvary,” and Ben Johnston’s String Quartet No. 4, “Amazing Grace.”
