nycinside.com: Comparing apartments

Via Rocketboom I’ve just learned about a new blog called nycinside.com. Their basic premise is that “it’s whats inside that counts.” People upload pictures of their apartments in the New York City area and people comment with praise and constructive criticism.

I love this idea; maybe I’ll take it national! It fits right into our peer-to-peer culture and spurs on a more well-considered visual environment. The site is well-designed and already (without any way to tell for certain, off-hand it seems pretty new) well-used.

From the website’s “about” page:

Ever walk by a ground floor apartment and take a peek? Or slow down as you pass a brownstone and stare inside? Welcome to nycinside.com, the only place on the web where you get to do what all New Yorkers love most, compare apartments.
Here you’ll get an inside look at every kind of NYC apartment in every area of New York City. Find out how people decorate their duplexes or layout their lofts; see where people sit in their studios or watch TV in their one bedrooms. You’ll not only get great ideas for setting up your own place, you’ll get to voice your opinion about how people design their homes. See, at nycinside.com, we know that if there’s one thing New Yorker’s like more than showing off their square footage, it’s seeing others. So, go ahead, praise, critique, get inspired and have fun!

Paul Nielsen founded The Aesthetic Elevator late in 2005. He owns a piece of paper, located somewhere in his house (not on the wall), stating that he earned a B.F.A. from the University of Nebraska around about 2001. While there, he studied studied architecture, graphic design and ceramics, graduating with a degree in studio art. Paul presently serves as communications manager for a small non-profit doing their print design and marketing. He spends as much time sculpting in his studio as possible — which is not nearly enough.
