Lowes to offer Katrina Cottages

Lowes home improvement store will begin selling three versions of the well-designed and increasingly popular Katrina Cottage — possibly by the end of 2006.. These kits will range from one bedroom (for around $27,000) to three bedroom (approximately $47,000). Kits do not include a foundation, HVAC or labor.
This is exciting in a number of ways. Well-designed pre-fab homes haven’t been a part of American culture for decades now. However, they are not a novel concept.
I’m surprised the MSN article doesn’t mention the old Sears homes. From 1908-1940 Sears Modern Homes sold more than 100,000 of these kits. “Shipped via railroad boxcars, these kits included all the materials needed to build an exceptionally sturdy and well-designed house. Many were assembled by the new homeowner and friends, relatives, and neighbors, in a fashion similar to the traditional barn-raisings of farming families.”
The following Wikipedia image shows the ad for model 115, offered from 1908-1914, for a cost of $725.
