Pink lawn flamingos: No more

NPR’s Robert Siegel interviews the creator of the plastic pink flamingo which donned people’s front yards. Union Products company in Leominster, Massachusetts, is closing tomorrow. The kitsch flamingos may soon be crowding antique shops and selling for outrageous prices.
Don Featherstone, the artist who created the plastic yard ornaments, chose to create the flamingo rather than be a starving artist. He went on to become president of the Union Products, retiring from the post six years ago.
