Bad holiday decorations I

Bicycling through town this afternoon I came across a mother and daughter setting up holiday decorations — Halloween decorations — in their front yard.

In their front yard sat some orange lights, one or two plastic tombstones and then the blow-up figures. The more obnoxious of the plastic figures looked more like a snowman. The lower part of the snowman. The lower of the spheres was clear plastic, and inside was a black cat with a lot of confetti flying around its head. I assume the black confetti represented bats.

Christmas, the American holiday during which people historically decorate their homes, is not much less tacky of late. Many fewer people decorate for Halloween at this point. I’m personally glad for this, but I’m pretty certain the manufacturing companies are lusting for the day when these cheap plastic things adorn lawns everywhere.

At least Christmas decorations can claim a tradition of elegance and thoughtful design. Of course, the idea of elegance probably doesn’t belong in the same paragraph as Halloween.

Shudder. Gaudy, tacky, cheesy and consumer driven. I’ll leave it at that. Such decorations are not visually well-considered. Look for pictures in the future.
